How Baby Names for Couples works

From download to the perfect name. Five steps, no account required, and completely free to start.

Baby Names for Couples is a free iOS app that helps two partners agree on a baby name using a swipe-to-match system. Each partner swipes through baby name cards independently on their own iPhone. When both partners swipe right on the same name, it appears on a shared matches list visible to both in real time. Neither partner sees the other's individual choices until there is a mutual match. The process turns an open-ended conversation into a structured, fun activity with a clear outcome: a shortlist of names you both love.

Step by step

1

Download and set your preferences. Get Baby Names for Couples from the App Store. It is free and there is no sign-up. Open the app and choose whether you are looking for boy names, girl names, or both. Pick a starting collection to swipe through, such as Rare Gems, Vintage Revival, Gender Neutral, Literary & Fictional, or Latin & Hispanic.

2

Connect with your partner. Tap the partner icon inside the app and share an invite link with your partner by text, email, or any messaging app. Your partner taps the link and you are connected. No email address, login, or account is needed. From this point, everything syncs between your two devices in real time.

3

Swipe through names independently. Each of you swipes through baby name cards at your own pace, on your own device. Swipe right to love a name, left to pass. Every card shows the name, its meaning, its origin, and a pronunciation audio button so you can hear how it sounds. You do not see what your partner swipes, and they do not see yours. The secrecy is part of the fun.

4

Discover your matches. When both of you swipe right on the same name, it is a match. The app shows a celebration screen and the name is added to your shared matches list. Both partners can see every match as it happens. You can also submit any name you like. Type it in, and the app generates its meaning, origin, and pronunciation automatically. The name then appears in your partner's swipe stack as a regular card, without them knowing you submitted it. If they love it too, it is a match.

5

Build your shortlist and decide. Star your favourite matches to move them to the top. Reorder your shortlist however you like. Use the "I Liked" tab to see every name you loved along with your partner's status: have not seen it yet, loved it too, or passed. Keep swiping new collections as you explore further. Work your way from hundreds of matches down to the one name you both agree on.

🔊

What you see on each name card

Every baby name card in the app includes the name itself, its meaning, its cultural or linguistic origin, and built-in pronunciation audio. Tap the speaker icon to hear exactly how the name sounds before you decide to swipe. This is particularly helpful for names from other cultures, names with unusual spellings, or names where pronunciation varies by region.

Some names also include popularity trend charts. These charts show how the name has ranked over time across up to 21 countries, including the UK, US, Australia, India, Japan, Brazil, France, Germany, and more. You can see whether a name is currently rising, falling, or holding steady. This helps if you want a name that feels current, or if you prefer one that is less common.

How partner pairing works

Baby Names for Couples uses anonymous device-based identity. When you open the app for the first time, it creates a unique device identity behind the scenes. There is no sign-up form, no email field, and no password. To pair with a partner, one of you shares an invite link from the app. The other taps the link and you are connected. Once paired, both devices stay synced. Matches, suggestions, and shortlist changes appear on both phones in real time.

If you prefer to use the app on your own, that works too. Solo mode gives you full access to swiping, pronunciation audio, popularity trends, and your own favourites list. You can connect with a partner at any point in the future without losing anything you have already saved.

Common questions

How do you connect with your partner?

One partner opens the app, taps the partner icon, and shares an invite link by text, email, or any messaging app. The second partner taps the link and they are connected. Both devices sync instantly. No account or email address is required.

Can you see what your partner swiped?

Not directly. Each partner swipes independently. The only names revealed to both are mutual matches. Your "I Liked" tab shows names you loved and whether your partner has seen them, loved them, or passed, but your partner does not see a corresponding view of your choices.

What information does each name card show?

Each card shows the name, its meaning, its origin, and a pronunciation audio button. Tap to hear how the name sounds. Some names also include popularity trend charts spanning up to 21 countries.

What are collections?

Collections are curated groups of baby names organised by culture, style, or theme. The app includes 24 collections such as Rare Gems, Vintage Revival, Gender Neutral, Literary & Fictional, Latin & Hispanic, Celtic & Irish, and more. When one partner adds a collection, both partners get access.

Can you suggest a name to your partner?

Yes. If you find a name you love, suggest it to your partner. The name appears in their next few cards so they see it sooner. Your partner still swipes on it independently, so the match only happens if they love it too.
